5 bästa reklamfilmerna under Super Bowl XLV

1. Chrysler Eminem Commercial – Imported From Detroit

2. Bridgestone – Reply All

3. Volkswagen – The Force

Check and check.

5. Doritos – Pug Attack

5 sämsta reklamfilmerna under Super Bowl XLV

1. Chatter.com: Halftime Ad 1 with will.i.am

2. Skechers – Break Up 2 Shape Up

3. Mini – Cram it in the Boot

Vad kreativt att göra en fejk-TV-show där man tävlar om att få in så mycket som möjligt in i en Mini för att visa hur mycket utrymme bilen har. För att göra filmen lite roligare kallar vi det för ”Cram it in the Boot” för att ha lite gay-referenser över det.

Tragiskt och dåligt.

4. GoDaddy – New GoDaddy.CO Girl

WTF? GoDaddy marknadsför .co-domäner med den här skit-reklamfilmen.

5. Groupon – Tibet

Bonus: Snyggast produktion – Volkswagen Beetle

Bonus: Skönaste Apple-Diss – Motorola, Empower the People

[Scroll down to read and hear the whole interview in English]

Interview with TotalBiscuit – Part 2 – eSport, marketing, gaming + a little bit of Minecraft

[Download it]

Q: If we go into the the other part of this interview it’s about eSports and gaming as a culture. I actually read what you wrote 2 days ago about eSports. You wrote a blog post where you say:

”To me, the future of eSports is sitting on your couch, with a beer in one hand and a packet of crisps/chips/whateverthefuck in the other, to relax and watch the game”

For many the readers of my blog – this seems kind of crazy with eSports. Because I can image that they don’t know why it’s so popular. Why do you that this will be possible – that people will sit on the couch and watch a game instead of an ordinary football game.

The end of the day a game is a game is a game. We always have arguments amongst a wide variety of people on what makes a sport and what doesn’t.

There are people that argue that Darts is not a sport, there are other people that argue it is.

There’s the argument that Tiddlywinks is not a sport. I turn around and say – Why is Tiddlywinks not a sport? To me it pretty much has all of the aspects of a sport:

It’s competetive

It requires manual dexterity

It requires training

It requires accuracy

There can be sponsorhips for tournaments

It can exist in a tournament format. And as silly as it sounds – these Tiddlywinks tournaments exist and there’s money on the line.

So I have to ask on that basis – Why is it that electronic sports, eSports, cannot work in the same fashion?

I think that what you will find is that there are a lot of sports that don’t do well in a televised or spectatorbased format – go back to Tiddlywinks. Who want to watch televised Tiddlywinks? Not a lot of people.

The thing about eSports is that it can be visually exciting. The problem that it has had thus far is for 1 – cultural acceptance. Gaming is still growing in terms of market force and in terms of being viewed as an acceptable hobby. It’s been viewed as nerdy and unhealthy – most people will be correct in asuming that.

I don’t view being nerdy as a bad thing – I think being nerdy is a great thing! It’s such an awesome thing to be able to truly embrace what you love with no inhibitions and no concerns as to the social acceptability of that. I think that’s a great thing, I think that’s a strong thing that you can do as a person.

As regards to eSports I think as computer gaming gets more accepted and wide spread that in turn eSports will as well.

It does depend on the title. There are certain games that don’t lend themself well to eSports. Maybe they’re not interesting to watch, maybe they’re not fast-paced enough. Maybe they’re just too hard to understand.

Potentionally almost any game that is multiplayer and has a competetive aspect to it can become an eSport. If you can spectate it there are people who are going to want to watch it. What is the most comfortable way of doing that? On a television, sitting on your couch with a beer in one hand and a packet of crips in the other.

People already do this for the GSL, Global StarCraft League, over in South Korea. It’s already watched on television in South Korea and there are a lot more people getting internet capable television as well as HTPCs, linked in to large plasma or LCD screen displays.

Actually, the cheapest way to get a monitor is to buy a television these days. They still use HDMI connections or indeed a VGA connection. You can go straight in to it just like you would with anything else; Blu-ray player, DVD player, satellite box. There are already people who are doing this and I think that audiences only going to grow as the StarCraft 2 scene grows and sponsorship is put in an people get to a higher level.

Q: I actually watched the SC2Reddit casting. During one time, I think it was the Swedish player MorroW vs Kiwikaki. And I was watching it and thinking – 15 000 viewers that were watching it live. It was kind of suprised on how many people it was that were viewing it live- You got cut off during one of the matches there i think…

Yes, right at the end. I was not happy about that. I’m looking forward to recasting those 5 minutes of that when we’re actually allowed to release the VODs (Video on Demand) of the match. Currently they’re holding it back until after the finals.

15 000 people – it doesn’t sound an awful lot when you compare it to normal sports, but I like to point out that you are also talking about technical limitations. We just can’t blast it out over the airwaves like a traditional signal.

Every single viewer is a drain on service in a way that it wouldn’t be on a traditional television or radio broadcasting. You are inherently limited in that regard. When you’re looking at the fact that it was relatively, in comparison to the GSL or the Dreamhack tournament, it was a fairly low-key tournamet – but it was very well marketed. It was still though aimed at a fairly limited demographic

Q: But it wasn’t that well marketed. For instance – in Sweden we don’t use Reddit because it’s a English site in English. We use our local social networks and read blogs etc. If you take that into consideration it wasn’t that heavily marketed if you compare it to a low-key TV show or GSL for example. A TV show on MTV in Sweden have about 40 000 viewers – so 15 000 for a StarCraft event that didn’t have that so much marketing – it’s quite big actually.

Yeah, it’s actually being one of the most watched , as far as I’m aware, livestreamed tournaments. I think it helped that Justin.tv was sponsoring it – so they were the streaming service and were able to provide a service above and beyond. They were really helping out and did a great job in terms of the technical side of things.

You also have to bear in mind that streaming is an imperfect science. Even the giants like Google, when they do their live events – there are still streaming problems.

It’s not a perfect technology and it will develop as Internet get better. It will develop as server power, compuper power gets better and the encoding and the codex that are used get more efficient.

We’re still in a time where the technology is developing. We are limited to what we can do. And as you said – I think that’s a very strong number and also bear in mind that it’s not the only way to watch it.

Some of the VODs (Video on-demand) are already up, I’m hosting some them myself, so far the series for White-Ra vs CatZ has polled in about 125 000 views. That was over the course for about three days and it’s going to to way better than that *

[* I truly recommend you to watch TotalBiscuit commentate this game to better understand his style...]

You can also see channels like HuskyStarCraft & HDStarcraft – they are polling in about 125-250 000 per match. Just think about how absurdely high that is! There’s a massive amount of interest in eSports – that’s very clear.

Q: One question that i think that a lot of people hav is: If you are an Advertising agency or a company for that matter and you see this eSport & gaming industry. How can you get involved in it? For instance – if I have a popular brand, in telecom business or clothing. And you see this – how do you get in to this? It’s a new force and it’s kind of tricky to get in to this and say ”Oh, I’m gonna do this”. Do you have any recommendations?

Absolutely. Here’s the thing: It seems difficult but in reality it just requires a little bit of out-of-the box thinking.

If you were to approach traditional advertising there would be advertising agencies to deal with that you would go to various companies. You already know your point of contacts, it’s all in a very organized fashion. ESports doesn’t really have a centralized system like that – we don’t have offical promotors.

The only official tournament is the GSL and that already has its advertisers sorted out through the company Gretech and GOMTV and that’s in South Korea.

As regards to these other tournaments, take Reddit for example, people advertising on the Reddit tournament: bear in mind that the rate of return and the ROI they got on that was ridiciusly high for the small amount of outlay they put out there in terms of money.

It’s simply a case of keeping an eye on upcoming tournaments and offering sponsorship or putting yourself out there and saying: ”We have this brand, we have this amount of money to spend and we’re going to spread across a wide variety of tournaments”

The thing about eSports is that while I want loads of money invested into eSports, obviously – it’s in my interest as a broadcaster, it’s often best to take relatively small amounts and spread it across several different events.

For instance – there are showmatches between two or four popular players, maybe it’s a mini tournament. Those needs sponsors to pay the players.

You attract the players by bringing in the money and the prize pool to make it attractive to spend their time doing it. If you’re not offering that kind of reward you may not be able to do that.

I said it before – it’s like a holy trinity. This is how eSports has to work right now and if you take any of these things away it stops functioning:

You have your players

You have your sponsors

You also have your broadcasters

And I also mix in there the audience as well

The sponsors are so vitally important – without the sponsors professional eSports does not exist. Just as without the players, broadcasters or the audience it does not exist. You can’t take any of those away - all three have to exist.

Right now the market is incredibly fertile for anyone that want to come in and offer a good quality product and offer money for that to be advertised.

The audience and the broadcasters are very greatful for that. They want professional eSports to succeed so they would actually support that beyond what you would have expect from a normal audience.

Q: I actually want to emphasise that. The community behind eSports is loyal – if they see a brand sponsoring – they will look at it as something good. They will look at it as a ”pillar of faith” or a god entity in some forms.

Yes, absolutely.

Q: If you look at the GSL and if you look at the broadcast and how many times Tasteless mention Sony Ericsson. It happens all the time – ”Thanks to our sponsors” – beacuse they’re truly happy for it. It’s not like a football championship where they say ”this is our sponsors, yeyeye”. People care about this.

They do. They are very passionate about it. Because it’s not entirely established yet potentionally it could implode entirely.

That’s always the risk with something like this and we don’t want it to fail which means that we are greatful to sponsors. It is an extremely fertile market to start with.

If we go back to the SCReddit for a second we’ve had the companies sponsoring that report an extremely high Return on investment and a massively increasde Click-through-rate, way beyond what they would have expected. As well as a ton of indirect brand recognition – very powerful stuff there

And again – we are very greatful for sponsors and we’re willing to check them out because not only were they smart, they targeted this.

For example a company like Hangwith.me, startup company, kind of a social networking for gamers but it’s more about finding people to play with, group up with in clans, guilds or teams.

They picked the perfect tournament to sponsor because that service is inheriently interesting and useful for gamers.

Zenmagnets, another prime example, gamers like nerdy and geeky stuff like ultra-powerful magnets they can mess around with. So perfect – Zenmagensts is a perfect sponsor for that.

You’ve got NewGamesNinja: They targeted their audience and that’s what every good marketing company does. They understand their demographics and that’s what companies investing i eSports have to understand as well.

Let’s make a stupid example – Lóreal Paris comes in and sponsors an eSport tournament. A demographic that’s primarily male, not necesseraly teenager – we’re talking probably for what I’ve seen on my eMetrics the primary demographic for StarCraft 2 broadcasting is male, 25-34. Which would indicate probably Bachelor degree, probably lot of disposable income there, techy-minded and orientated.

So Lóreal Paris isn’t going to find a lot of success there but anything that’s even remotely connected to that let’s say Gillette…

Q: Clothing?

T: … Clothing, Yep, male clothing. Gillette, Wilkingson, Sword, shaving stuff – even Axe deodorant or Linx.

Anything that is remotely interesting to that demographic is going to do well and of course they will get that extra bump, that extra boost fo support because they’re backing up a very growing that needs their help. We will respond well and positivetly to that.

Q: What obstacles do you think eSports have? For instance – the largest sport in eSports right now is StarCraft 2. You mentioned that a little bit in your article about that: It’s not about analyzing it’s about commentating the obvious, right?

I think there’s an element of that, certainly. That’s one of the things we’re trying to work through as a community right now.

There are a variety of different opinions on this and this is actually on of the obstacles of eSports going forward and people have different ideas on how it should proceed.

The way that the traditional sports model work is that you generally have a play-by-play commentator, you also have a analytical commentator.

Q: You have one of each..

Yeah, exactly. Usually you have 2-3 on a commentating team. Let’s take for example football where you have quite a lot of that.

The american sports model is probably the strongest. They tend to divide the commentators in a very obvious fasion.

Here’s your play-by-play guy: He’s probably the one with most broadcast experience, He’s got the strongest voice, he’s got the most excitable and powerful voice. And when he’s finished calling the plane trying to hype and bring emotion and drama to the event.

Then you have the analytical guy who perhaps knows a lot more. Perhaps he knows the same as the play-by-play commentator. He’s been put in that role as the guy who analyses the plays and very often the analysis guy would be at a ex- or a current professional sports player. Whereas the play-by-play guy may also have a backround there but he would often also be involved in broadcast and he will have a lot more broadvast training and experience.

The thing about eSports right now is that there aren’t any commentary teams that fit directly in to this role, not any regular teams. Every now and again some commentators will get together and do some co-commentary and they might fit in to that.

The problem right now is that people don’t really know which way commentary should go. I think that there has to be a certain degree of consistency there because that’s what traditional sport has.

When you watch the Super Bowl or the World Cup you know what you’re going to hear every time you tune in. When it comes to StarCraft tournaments you don’t know what you’re going to hear. You might get a commentator that’s entirely different that focuses on entirely different things. There’s a lot of solo commentators out ther, myself included. I don’t deal with analysis at all and that’s certainly one of my weak points.

Q: You’re actually on one side and Day[9] on the other side. It’s two different things.

Almost polar opposites. So I would say that it’s quite of a barrier right now. I don’t know what the right answer is but my theory again is that there has to be an element of stating the obvious because otherwise spectator sports does not work.

When spectator sports becomes too stressful and stressful to watch they will stop spectating.

You have to have information spoon-fed to you because that’s what entertainment is. You are being provided with entertainment – you are not making your own entertainment.

So yes, there is an element of stating the obvious calling the places as you see them because people don’t want to be analytical themself necessarily. There’s an element of the audience but I would not call them a majority by any stretch. Certainly they should be catet and that’s why these teams of commentators have to eventually be formed for eSports to go any further.

I would say that there is a certain amount of hostility towards straight up play-by-play that I don’t think should be there and I think that’s holding the scene back. It’s not the most important thing, it’s not the biggest barrier. There are much bigger barriers like the acceptence of wider audience as well as the technical limitations that I discussed earlier with streaming that are much larger barriers to wide-spread live viewing of eSports. Something that the community have to wrestle with is how it should be presented to a wider audience.

Q: How much do you think that eSports and gaming will grow within two or three years. How will we i Western countries, not South Korea, what will happen to eSports in say 2014?

Honestly, the way that it’s going right now it could only grow. Unless StarCraft 2 in the next 6 months falls flat on its face, which is extremely unlikely in the way it’s currently going. ESports will continue to grow and get more popular.

I think the problem right now is that fact that it’s very limited in terms of which games are an accepted spectator eSport and which aren’t. StarCraft 2 is dominant in terms of spectator views in the West. I don’t think there’s any question about that.

There are other games but they don’t even come close. We’re talking about things like Street Fighter 4. Street Fighter 4 – very popular in Asian territories as well: there are major events, the MLG covers Street Fighter, there’s of course the Evolution series.

Q: Wasn’t it at Dreamhack as well?

Yes, Dreamhack as well. I watched the Swedish commentators a bit there myself, they were very excited – big fan of that. I didn’t even watch the English guys – i thought the English guys were way more in to it. I didn’t understand a word they were saying but I was excited.

The problem with that is that there’s so limited scenes because outside tournament play they don’t get regular view.

Sometimes that will be because there isn’t an easy way of doing that. A big problem with say… Street Fighter. It’s a console game. Street Fighter 4 was out on PC but then Super Street Fighter 4 came, which is not available on PC because CapCom are crazy! As a result the way of capturing the games is more awkward, way more awkward.

You have to use a capture device to do it – it’s a big pain to deal with. It involves a larger outlay of cash to start with. An expensive capture advice is not a thing that a lot of people can afford which means the commentaring scene for that is naturally slower.

There’s a lot of things coming in from Asian territories but that’s often low quality stuff so it’s not all that nice to watch. Audio quality is all over the place so there’s a lack of consistency there.

If anyone wants to go in to the eSports market as a developer they’ve got to insure that the game is spectateable that’s not even a word. We’ll try it anyway – easy to watch, easy to spectate and easy to commentate. They’ve got to put the tools in there for broadcasting.

There is… I can’t remember. Is Stunlock studios a Swedish company? They’re coming out with a game, I think it was yesterday called Bloodline Champions, which is designed as a eSports arena game.

Q: I will check that out

Yeah, I did a video on it a while back and intend to do some more, just got to get a hold of the game. I have to check if Stunlock studios is Swedish right now – I would be really embarrased if it wasn’t.

Yes, yes – looks like it is!

They designed that as a eSports title. It’s very easy to spectate and it has got everything you need for it to be a competetive eSport. It is very high skill level. All of the randomness where taken out of the game.

They even hired a guy who commentates on ESL, James 2GDHarding, as their consultant. That helped them an enormous amount. I think that Bloodline Champions will probably take off.

There are other games say DOTA-style games, or DOTA-clones. Heroes of Newerth – getting more popular because S2 is pumping a lot of money in to it and really supporting it as an eSport. There’s DotA 2 coming out of Valve, there’s League of Legends which did show at the World Cybergames, unfortunately.

I keep telling Riot: What are you doing? Make this possible! You can’t spectate it – it’s got no replay system, no casting system and no spectator mode which makes it extremely hard to turn it to an proper eSport.

If more games take that in to account and give the tools that are required then I think eSport will grow in terms of variety.

In terms of technicality though, it’s gonna come down to, at least in terms of live event views, it’s going to come down to how much streaming services are able to cope with numbers.

YouTube can manage it but sports has always been about the live experience and right now there are a bunch of competeing services liek Own3d, Justin.tv, UStream, Livestream…

Q: You also have the Swedish live streaming service Bambuser if have heard of it?

I have not, but there you go – there’s another one.

It always come down to technical limitations and again, because television is not held back by that they can reach a huge audience. Until the technology grows, until the support grows eSports is always going to remain… certainly not unpopular, by any stretch, certainly not unviable in terms of professional play and sponsorship but it’s going to be held back by technology.

When technology advances – then absolutely it will grow much bigger. One last thing I like to point out in that regard is that I think the growth of mobile internet viewing is really helping eSports. I’ve seen a noticable increase in views on my channel from mobile devices whether or not they’ll be cell phones, iPads, tablet devices and of course Netbooks and things like that.

As that technology continues to grow people are able to absorb their entertainment on the move. They are going to be doing what the guys who used to do with those little portable televisions. You remember in the 90s – those portable things. Ugly things they would carry around and watch the football game – they’re going to watch the StarCraft game now on their tablets, smart phones.

Q: You know those old radio speakers people had on the trains? People want to hear the football game. That was quite common.

Exactly, yeah! And your’re going to be able to do that with eSports and in fact you already can and the technology is only getting better. It will continue to get better over the next couple of years. Especially as 3G Internet access is made more widely available in certain territories and of course WiFi hotspots continue to spread.

Q: Here in Sweden we already have the 4G network so we have mobile connection in 4g. So basically on my mobile connection I have about 30MBit down ad 6Mbit up.

Extremely impressive. The sad thing about that is that it is three times as fast as my internet connection at home. Oh, we have bad internet over here!

Q: Time flies away here and I actually have 2 more question that I want to ask. Many people are working here are looking at Seoul in South Korea when it comes to eSports and it’s been big for about 10 years over there with starts like Lim Yo Hwan, Boxer, NaDa and many more. Maybe there should be one city in Europe that should be the centre for eSports just like Seoul is the centre for eSports in Asia and South Korea? The teams are located at the same place, the TV shows are there as well. What do you think about that and what requires for a city or a business region to become the gaming and eSport centre in the Western world.

A wide variety of factors i think.

For one you need the support, the grass-roots support from the spectators. Let’s say Seoul you know that people will come out and watch. You need a city where you know that people come out an watch and it also need to be accessable for the international audience as much as possible.

You are never going to get everyone to fly across over – there’s going to be people who say ”I’m on the other side of the planet – I can’t do it”, but then again – that’s what streaming is for.

Yeah, I think that could happen, as long as the support is there. The facilities need to be there, you’ve got to have extremely well internet connectivity. It has to be a place that’s easily accessable in terms of transport links. Just like the way you would build a stadium – you don’t build a stadium in an obscure place that don’t have transport links because you’re talking about moving a large number of people there on a regular basis. If they can’t get there – they won’t show up. That matters a lot as well so a place with good transportation and access as well as access from airports and train stations.

It also comes down to – can you get local support in terms of promotion for the events and sponsorship. That is something that local companies and larger corporations could definitely could get involved in. You see it with companies like Sony Ericsson – strong presence in South Korea, also backing up South Korean eSports – it makes perfect sense.

You need kind of that ”perfect storm” really that’s coming together from all these different elements to make it work. And of course you need the facility to make it happen. You need an arena that is specifically designed for this kind of thing because it’s not the same as sports. It’s not a football pitch. You need a lot of things set up for it that you wouldn’t need in other sports.

There needs to be a lot of consideration and I think analysis of how previous tournaments have been done, the mistakes as well as their successes – it does need to be done if that would ever happen.

Q: I also one last question for you: When are you going to commentate on Minecraft on you YouTube channel

Oh, you evil, evil person!

Q: You know, MineCraft is Swedish and a lot of people and newspapers writee about MineCraft about this huge phenomenon in gaming and it’s so great and so good.

It is, it’s a huge phenomenon the world over. I think it was today or yesterday when he announced he has sold 1 Million copies – consider that for a second. His development company consisted of him – he is a multi millionaire – and his game hasn’t even been launched yet! It is absurd, and it is amazing – mad props for that!

The thing about Minecraft right now, it’s a phenomenon, it’s extremely popular on YouTube, but it also comes down to the fact that my channel is about what I want to do for the most part of things.

I like Minecraft, I like to play it and play it quite a bit. I’m not convinced that I can present Minecraft the way I want to present it. I just don’t agree with throwing out Minecraft and say: ”Hey, I’m commentating Minecraft, blablablablabla”. Yeah, I would probably get a lot of views for it and probably make a lot of money from it but I personally wouldn’t be happy with it on a personal and creative level.

I don’t think I can live up to the other series being done right now, the BlueXephos series is one of the best and funniest Minecraft I’ve ever seen. We’ve also got people on Seananas who do a exceptionally popular series.

Even if I think I could live up to that it also… I’m very careful to say this because obviously I’ve got a lot of fans in Sweden… There are certain people I’ve noticed who like Minecraft that seem to be a bit unhinged.

I like to call them ”Creepers” – that’s the word I’ve come up with for them. These guys that seems utterly obsessed with the game to the point where if you ever post anything related to Minecraft – all that they will ever demand from you in the future is: More Minecraft! MOAR! It’s infuriating, as a creater you don’t want that. That actually disheart me quite a bit so I’ve avoided entirely even though I can make mad money of it. I’m not going to do it. I’ll leave it to the other guys so I don’t think there’s going to be Minecraft content on my channel in the near future.

Q: You have my deepest respect for that. I would like to thank you very much for this interview. Is there anything you want to say to Sweden and the Swedish people?

Yeah, absolutely! I would like to say thank you to all of the Swedes – Sweden is such a strong demographics, strong supporter – they’ve made this the way that it is, that made it possible.

I hope to see as many viewers as possible on Dreamhack because I’m going to get there hell or high water. I wasn’t able to go last time – I did commentate it from home, I wanted to go it just didn’t work out. I want to be there at the next one to meet all the Swedish fans so I’m going to try as hard as I can to be there so I hope to meet as many of you as possible.

Q: Thank you very much for this and have a lovely evening! Probably doing some commentary?

More work! I’ve got Azeroth Daily to finish and then I’m going to commentate some DC Universe.

Q: Good luck with that and we will of course watch the videos tomorrow. Thank you very very much!

Thank you!
